vaping projects

The issue: Since entering the American market in 2007, electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes or vapes have undergone a rapid evolution. Originally developed as an alternative form of nicotine delivery and tobacco smoking cessation, they have been transformed into high-tech nicotine delivery devices, appealing to non-smokers, particularly youth. Youth are exposed to vape devices and e-liquid (commonly known as e-juice) on social networking platforms and internet, where prospective users can learn about products, share experiences, and make purchases.

Project summary: Our international cross-disciplinary research team are collaborating with community organisations to understand how e-cigarettes are promoted, accessed, and used within a tightly regulated environment by exploring the online and real-world e-cigarette environment, along with gathering the perspective of users and other stakeholders to identify how to deal with this nascent issue.

Relevance for practice and policy: Our research informs recommendations for interventions aimed at reducing youth exposure to e-cigarettes. We achieve this by collaborating with our partner organisations to influence vape product advertising/promotion on social media and the internet, identifying new and innovative responses to vape use, and interventions to prevent uptake, delay first use, and reduce nicotine addiction among young people

Project funding: Two Healthway Exploratory Grants (2021-2023)

Who’s involved: Our international research team comprises Professor Jonine Jancey, Dr Kahlia McCausland, A/Professor Katharina Wolfe, Professor Tama Leaver, Dr Kevin Chai, A/Prof Becky Freeman, Professor Stella Bialous, along with students and our extensive industry collaborators.
